In 1739 Jean-Siméon Chardin painted "The governess" , where
shows a finely dressed boy with books under his arm, being addressed by his
governess as she prepares to brush his tricorn hat, and also shows scattered on
the floor a racquet, a shuttlecock, and
playing cards that the boy leaves as he prepares to go to his studies.
