In 1761
Anton Raphael Mengs painted "Parnassus" whose scene is taken from
Classical mythology. Mount Parnassus in central Greece was where the ancients
believed Apollo (god of poetry ,music, and the arts) standing at the center in the painting , and
the nine Muses (female personifications of artistic inspiration) resided.
