In 1905 Henri Matisse painted "the woman with the
hat", whose colors are so bright that they seem to advance or push forward
out of the picture plane (instead of creating an illusion of space behind it).
nonnaturalistic color and its broad and blunt brushwork the sitter, an
otherwise conventional subject for a portrait, has a thick green stripe across
her brow and down her nose.
