THE INTRIGUE, Painting by James Ensor (1890)

James Ensor shows a tightly packed group of people bustling and jostling towards us. This group with disturbing faces creates a mindless crowd that seems to move menacingly upon us. Whose faces are covered with blank, sometimes eyeless masks modeled on the grotesque papier-mâché masks that his family sold for the pre-Lenten carnival, a major holiday in Ostend.
