THE NIGHTMARE, Painting by John Henry Fuseli (1781)


The painting "THE NIGHTMARE" communicates fear of the unknown and unknowable, John Henry Fuseli shows a woman sprawled across a divan with her head thrown back. She is oppressed by a gruesome incubus,an evil spirit, crouching on her pelvis. According to legend, the incubus was believed to feed by stealing women and having sex with them.
