Watson
and the Shark Painting by John Singleton Copley, dramatizes an episode of 1749,
in which the 14-year-old Watson was attacked by a shark while swimming in
Havana Harbor, and lost part of his right leg before being rescued. Copley made
up of figures in a boat and the hapless Watson in the water with a highly
imaginary shark set against the backdrop of the harbor.
