Jacques-Louis David in 1793 painted the death of
marat, who he was the Jacobin leader. The painting shows when Marat slumped in
his bathtub, his right hand still holdinga quill pen, while his left hand
grasps the letter that Corday used to gain access to his home. The simple wooden
block beside the bath, which Marat used as a desk, is inscribed with Marat´s
name and the painter´s dedication, and becomes his tombstone.
